Dear Grade 6 Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We hope everyone had a good summer and is excited about the upcoming school year. We are looking forward to working with your child this year. If your child is not registered for band and would like to join, it is not too late. Please return a band registration form or e-mail us for more information. There is something very special about the first notes of Grade 6 band and we are looking forward to sharing this excitement with each of them.
Our band classes follow the elementary calendar Day 1-5 system. Our regular band classes will begin Friday September 9 – Day 1. One band time will be a 45 sectional at the students’ home school and the second will be a 60 minute full band class at Campbell. We will be visiting students prior to this to make sure they are organized for our band year.
Grade 6 Band Times are:
Grant Road – Day 3 morning and Day 4 afternoon
McVeety – Day 3 morning and Day 5 afternoon
Massey – Day 2 afternoon and Day 3 morning
Perry – Day 1 afternoon and Day 3 morning
Headstart Clinic – SEPT. 9 and SEPT.10 at Campbell
We have a very important and special clinic that happens on Sept. 9 and Sept. 10. Our headstart clinic is both a celebration of starting a new instrument and a VERY important weekend of skill development. This is the first time students will need their instruments. We have many of our best musicians in the city working with our Grade 6’s. These clinics are extremely important to ensure success for the year. At these clinics students will learn how to properly put instruments together and produce their initial sounds. It is very important all Grade 6 students are at these clinics. PLEASE MAKE SURE CLINIC TIMES AND DATES ARE MARKED ON THE CALENDAR.
Headstart Clinic Times – (Everything at Campbell)
Fri. Sept. 9– 6:00p.m.- 8:00p.m. – clinics - meet in the Auditorium
Sat. Sept. 10 – 9:30a.m.- 12:10p.m. – clinics
Sat. Sept. 10 – 12:15p.m. – Presentation for Parents in the Auditorium
*On Friday all students will meet in the auditorium. We will then take students to their clinic room. (For those not familiar with Campbell, if you walk in the front doors the auditorium is just past the gym and to your left.)
Grade 6 students will be starting with the Measures of Success Book 1. Students will need to purchase this. St. Johns’ Music, Long and McQuade Music sell these books. As well, please make sure you have checked the attached instrument specific needs list.
Students need to make sure they have made arrangements for instruments. Flutes, clarinets, alto/tenor saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and percussion kits are rented from either St. John’s Music (757-7272) or Long and McQuade Music (569-8501). French horns, euphoniums, oboes and tubas are rented through the school. If we knew your child was planning on playing a school instrument (from June registration forms) we have one reserved. If your child is planning on playing a school instrument and a registration form was not handed in please let us know so we can make the appropriate arrangements. If you are planning on purchasing a new or used instrument or borrowing an instrument, please have your instrument checked either by an instrument repair technician or by one of us. In order to ensure success for your child it is important to have a properly functioning instrument. Please let us know if you need help in getting an instrument.
School Instrument Rental
If your child is renting a tuba, French horn, euphonium or oboe from the school, we will be sending home a rental contract. Please fill this in, keep the back copy and return the rest of the form to us. The $120 rental fee will appear on your online account. If it is not possible to pay for this online, please let us know.
Regina Board of Education Band Transportation Fee
The $50 band transportation fee will appear on your Regina Public online account. Please pay this online. If this is not possible please let us know. (Please note: Since Massey students walk to band at Campbell they will not need to pay the $50 transportation fee.)
Our band uniform t-shirt will again be student designed. Students are invited to submit their design ideas to us by Sept. 30. From these designs a committee will choose the t-shirt we will use for our 2016-2017 band t-shirt. We will be sending home a t-shirt form. The $15 payment will appear in each student’s online payment.
